Temporary Galleries - Dino Jaws, Natural History Museum

Exhibition designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates created environments in which the star objects were the large animatronic dinosaurs.  DHA Designs’ challenge – uniquely for a London museum – was to develop a lighting system that didn’t use the existing lighting track, but that was a stand-alone system that could be toured with the show.

DHA Designs and RAA introduced a low level setworks detail that concealed a track-and-spot system with filters and lenses to uplight the dinosaurs and cast shadows across the backdrops.  Each display had its own lighting show and playback system with constantly cycling lighting effects as the dinosaurs moved.  Combined with a smoking pile of dinosaur poo(!) this exhibition was hugely popular, especially with children.
