Exhibitions - V&A Hollywood Costume

A glorious assembly of some of the most iconic and memorable costumes from films across all ages of Hollywood production, Hollywood Costume explored how the simple act of dressing an actor creates a character in their style of dress, the fabrics and even the colours.

DHA were tasked to recreate the effect of film lighting, while maintaining strict light level controls, as some of the costumes are now of great age and are extremely fragile - Scarlett O'Hara's green dress from Gone with the Wind is now particularly faded after an extended publicity tour across America. Using a mix of film ligths, adapted for use in the museum, and museum-grade lighting instruments, DHA sought to create the effect of being on a 'hot set'[ through the lighting, without affecting the extensive use of projected material.
