Exterior - Young Vic Theatre

The exterior lighting for the newly refurbished Young Vic Theatre in London was designed by DHA Designs in 2005, working closely with the architect, Howarth Tompkins, and the artist Clem Crosby.

The existing auditorium of the Young Vic Theatre has been significantly adapted and re-skinned in a composite of unique, hand-painted cement board panels by artist collaborator Clem Crosby and offset by silver mesh panels held away from the painted surfaces.

The void between Clem Crosby’s painted board panels and the outer metal mesh cladding around the auditorium is uplit using surface mounted warm-white 35W metal halide projectors. The luminaries are fitted with longitudinal lenses that produce a letterbox distribution of light, grazing up the façade.

This project was shortlisted in the Exterior Lighting category of The Lighting Design Awards 2007.
