Permanent Galleries - London’s Transport Museum
DHA Designs were commissioned in 2004 to work on the £17m refurbishment of London's Transport Museum in Covent Garden alongside Avery Associates, RAA, Conran Design Group and Lumsden Design Partnership. The museum was re-opened by Ken Livingstone in November 2007, after an additional floor was added to the old Flower Market to increase display space. DHA Designs were also commissioned to re-light the shop, cafe and theatre spaces.
The design scheme was intended to utilise traditional transport lighting in a museum application, as opposed to a traditional gallery solution. The galleries are arrayed chronologically, but the linear lighting profiles link the different spaces together, using linear fluorescent technology where possible (typical to transport). The vehicle hall has daylight, but at night is transformed by the lighting into a moonlit bus garage feel, with white lamps crossfading to blue.
